David, What does John 8:56 mean when it says that Abraham saw Christ’s day and was glad.
What did Abraham understand about his “seed”? Perhaps more than we might suspect. Again, the NT commentary helps us. Jesus tells the skeptics in John 8:56, “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” How we might ask, did Abraham see Christ’s day? We can only conjecture, but Hebrews 11:19 tells us that Abraham was able to march up Mt. Moriah with Isaac because he believed God could raise him from the dead. After seeing God supply a ram as a substitute for his son, he named the place “Yahweh Jireh,” the Lord will provide. Perhaps this is the time Jesus referenced when Abraham saw His day, namely, that God would provide a blood sacrifice, and was glad.
