“Dave, could you please give a concise overview of Romans 9?”
A CONCISE AND SUCCINCT OVERVIEW OF ROMANS 9
Romans 9:1-5 — Paul expands on 3:1-3 and shares his burden for the salvation of the Jewish people who had been greatly advantaged.
Romans 9:6-13 — in God’s separating the nation Israel, physical descent didn’t guarantee being retained in the chosen lineage then he gives two examples of this. Then Paul points out God’s choice of Jacob over Esau for the promised lineage of the nation (and he quotes Gen 25:23; it’s also clear from this quote that Paul is dealing corporately not individually). Then he quotes from Mal 1:2-4; this quote also shows that he is talking corporately. Paul is not teaching here unconditional individual election.
Romans 9:14-29 — Paul gives four examples of God’s sovereign justice in His dealings with the nation Israel, clearly raising the issue of charges of God’s injustice in v. 14.
