ESV TNIV NET NLT The Message
1 Pet 1:3-7 3(A) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!(B) According to his great mercy,(C) he has caused us to be born again to a living hope(D) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to(E) an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and(F) unfading,(G) kept in heaven for you, 5who by God’s power are being guarded(H) through faith for a salvation(I) ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by(J) various trials, 7so that(K) the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes(L) though it is tested by(M) fire—may be found to result in(N) praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Pet 1:13
13Therefore,(A) preparing your minds for action,[a] and(B) being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Pet 2:11-12
11Beloved, I urge you(A) as sojourners and exiles(B) to abstain from the passions of the flesh,(C) which wage war against your soul. 12(D) Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers,(E) they may see your good deeds and glorify God on(F) the day of visitation.

1 Pet 2:21-25
21For(A) to this you have been called,(B) because Christ also suffered for you,(C)leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22(D) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23(E) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten,(F) but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24(G) He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we(H) might die to sin and(I) live to righteousness.(J) By his wounds you have been healed. 25For(K) you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to(L) the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Pet 3:15
15but(E) in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy,(F) always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and(G) respect,
1 Pet 4:12-14
12Beloved, do not be surprised at(A) the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice(B) insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad(C) when his glory is revealed. 14(D) If you are insulted(E) for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory[a] and of God rests upon you.
1 Pet 5:6-7
6(C) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7(D) casting all your anxieties on him, because(E) he cares for you. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
22 “He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.” [a]
23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24″He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have beenhealed.” 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” [b] but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1:3 Blessed be8 the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 1:4 that is,9 into10 an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, 1:5 who by God’s power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1:6 This brings you great joy,11 although you may have to suffer12 for a short time in various trials. 1:7 Such trials show the proven character of your faith,13 which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away14 – and will bring praise15 and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.16
1:13 Therefore, get your minds ready for action29 by being fully sober, and set your hope30 completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.31
2:11 Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul, 2:12 and maintain good conduct30 among the non-Christians,31 so that though32 they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears.33
2:21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps. 2:22 He46 committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.47 2:23 When he was maligned, he48 did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened49 no retaliation,50 but committed himself to God51 who judges justly. 2:24 He52 himself bore our sins53 in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning54 and live for righteousness. By his55 wounds56 you were healed.57 2:25 For you were going astray like sheep58 but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
3:15 But set Christ24 apart25 as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.26
4:12 Dear friends, do not be astonished31 that a trial by fire is occurring among you,32 as though something strange were happening to you. 4:13 But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed33 you may also rejoice and be glad.34 4:14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory,35 who is the Spirit of God,36 rests37 on you.
5:6 And God will exalt you in due time,10 if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand11 5:7 by casting12 all your cares13 on him because he cares for you. 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
6 So be truly glad.[a] There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
13 So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world
21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered[a] for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.
22 He never sinned,
nor ever deceived anyone.[b]
23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted,
nor threaten revenge when he suffered.
He left his case in the hands of God,
who always judges fairly.
24 He personally carried our sins
in his body on the cross
so that we can be dead to sin
and live for what is right.
By his wounds
you are healed.
25 Once you were like sheep
who wandered away.
But now you have turned to your Shepherd,
the Guardian of your souls.
15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.
12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.
14 So be happy when you are insulted for being a Christian,[a] for then the glorious Spirit of God[b] rests upon you
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 3-5What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.
6-7I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.
13So roll up your sleeves, put your mind in gear, be totally ready to receive the gift that’s coming when Jesus arrives.
11-12Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.
21-25This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step.
He never did one thing wrong,
Not once said anything amiss.
They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.
Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy.
12-13Friends, when life gets really difficult, don’t jump to the conclusion that God isn’t on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner.
14-16If you’re abused because of Christ, count yourself fortunate. It’s the Spirit of God and his glory in you that brought you to the notice of others.
6-7So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.
